With the season changes, make sure your immune system is at its best by getting adjusted!

Our nervous system and immune system are hardwired to work together allowing for optimal responses for the body to adapt, regulate and heal appropriately. Nerve interference due to spinal misalignments are stressful to the body and can cause abnormal changes. This may lead to poorly coordinated immune responses and symptoms such as runny nose, fatigue, watery eyes and chronic bouts of illness.  Chiropractic adjustments have been scientifically shown to boost the coordinated response of the immune and nervous system, improving overall health!

Your nervous system is made up of your central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and your peripheral nervous system. A part of the peripheral system is called your autonomic nervous system (ANS) which influences your internal organs. The ANS is hardwired to the lymphoid organs (spleen, thymus, lymph nodes and bone marrow) which produce the body’s immune response. There is growing evidence of the connection of overall immune function and regulation by the ANS.

Chiropractic adjustments help regulate the ANS.   It communicates with endocrine and immune tissue to modulate chemical reactions that keep you healthy. Other documented side effects of this autonomic regulation include lowering blood pressure, reduced anxiety, and decrease in inflammatory cytokines and pain.

Researchers in New York found that people under chiropractic care for more than five years demonstrated 200% greater immune function that those who had not.  One very interesting study measured a 48% increase in CD4 cells in HIV patients over a six-month period, compared to an 8% decrease in the control group over the same period of time.  CD4 cells are important immunoglobulins that play a critical role in HIV and AIDS.  Similarly, an enhancement in white blood cells has been measured with chiropractic care.

Chiropractic adjustments do not treat these conditions directly; we address the spinal misalignments and nerve dysfunction that we find and this encourages a cascade of reactions that allow your body to do what it does best adapt, regulate and heal!  So next time you are feeling a little under the weather, look to your chiropractor to help give your nervous and immune system a little healthy boost so you can get back to doing what you love.
